The Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at empowering thousands of Nigerian youths with crucial knowledge on data privacy and protection. This initiative aligns with the Eight Presidential Priorities and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with a focus on enhancing youth involvement in Nigeria’s burgeoning digital economy.

During the MoU signing ceremony in Abuja this week, Minister of State for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential for job creation and wealth development. He praised the NDPC’s efforts, led by Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner/CEO, in fostering opportunities specifically targeted at Nigerian youths.

“More than 80% of human capital development under President Tinubu’s administration is youth-focused. This initiative is poised to equip 5,000 youths with technical skills, opening doors to new jobs within the data protection ecosystem,” said Olawande.

Dr. Olatunji highlighted the importance of data protection in building trust and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) in Nigeria’s digital economy. “Investors will be more inclined to engage with Nigeria when we showcase accountability in managing their data. With over 500,000 data controllers in the country, each required to have a data protection officer, this initiative presents a substantial opportunity for youth employment,” he stated.

Olatunji also revealed that the program includes globally recognized certifications, issued by a licensed in-country certification body, which will reduce the strain on foreign exchange for those seeking international accreditation.

Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, commended the NDPC’s commitment to data privacy and pledged the Ministry’s full support in ensuring the success of the collaboration.

B.B. Bamigboye, NDPC’s Head of Legal, Enforcement, & Regulations, reiterated the Commission’s dedication to equipping Nigeria’s youth with the skills needed to lead the country’s digital transformation.
