The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha has asked for stakeholders’ support across broad spectrums of Nigerian society to enable the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) institutionalize the tenets of privacy.

Mustapha spoke during a recent courtesy call by the National Commissioner/CEO of the NDPB, Dr. Vincent Olatunji to brief him on the activities of the Bureau as well as seek collaboration with the Office of the Government of the Federation (OSGF) towards the implementation of a robust data governance in Nigeria.
While explaining the historical developments around data privacy and the foundation of data protection in Nigeria, Dr Olatunji highlighted the objectives of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) to drive awareness and compliance.
He said the creation of the NDPB has helped to rally stakeholders’ awareness, create trust and confidence in Nigeria’s digital economy, In addition, the Bureau is helping to promote growth, wealth and job creation in the steadily evolving data economy.
All of these have helped to strengthen Nigeria’s value proposition globally in the data protection ecosystem, the National Commissioner added.
The SGF assured the Bureau of support while tasking the team to ensure adhering to global best practice.
He noted that Nigeria was fast becoming a data driven society hence, the need to curb the menace of data breaches.
The SGH agreed that practices related to data privacy need to be institutionalized especially within the public sector through the issuance of a service-wide circular for compliance to the provisions of the NDPR.
He said the OSGF will work with the privacy ombudsman to ensure the public sector leads in terms of compliance to the NDPR.
