Cybercrimes are on the rise and, to be honest, most of us are still a little lax when it comes to online security. Sometimes, however, as it became painfully apparent during the recent Facebook scandal, it does not even have to be you who is careless.
Let’s take a look at what happened there as a cautionary tale. Around a quarter of million people used an app that was phrased as a personality quiz. What they did not know, however, was that the app allowed a marketing company access to their info and the info of connected accounts.
In the end, the marketing company had access to some 87 million people’s data.
How do you protect yourself online? For starters, be careful what you download on any site. Use a good anti-virus like BitDefender to protect yourself from malware and intrusions, so that you can surf the web safely in complete privacy. That way, no one can monitor what you are doing online.
Next up, be careful about what you share with others online. If you do not share important stuff online, there is much less risk of criminals getting access to your information. Think about what you are sharing before you post – how much information are you giving people?
Take a simple, fun Facebook quiz – like working out what your stripper name is. Harmless, right? Except that usually it will ask for something like the first street you lived on and perhaps your pet’s name.
Do those questions sound familiar to you? They should, they are often security questions that will be asked to confirm identity.
Now the hacker has everything – your full names, your date of birth, etc. The moral of the story, be careful about what you share online.
