About 790 issues relating to data protection have been resolved through the partnership of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) with licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs).
Director General, NITDA, Mallam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi disclosed this at a recent a professional development workshop organised by the agency targeting to firm up the development of data privacy in the country.
According to Abdullahi, NITDA, in partnership with DPCOs, have issued about 230 enforcement and compliance notices, several press statements and capacity trainings – all of which have led to a deeper sense of awareness on data protection and more patronage of the DPCOs.
“We participated in about 93 events hosted by DPCOs and other stakeholders all in a bid to deepen understanding and to improve compliance. Hosting of the first Data Privacy Week, where we promoted data privacy protection through all media, Resolved 790 issues relating to data protection and investigation of data breach cases of which one was concluded in a world-record of four months and the fine has been paid to the federal government,” said Mallam Abdullahi who was represented by Director, eGovernment Development and Regulations (eGDR), Dr. Vincent Olatunji.
He commended the resilience and innovation of DPCOs in entrenching data protection in Nigeria.
According to Abdullahi, the workshop has met its objective of developing the capacity of DPCOs to be better prepared and equipped to operationalize the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) and the Data Protection Act (when passed).
Participants at the workshop thanked the agency for promoting policies and strategies designed to nurture the data industry to maturity.
