Data Sovereignty: A Pillar of Nigeria’s Digital Future
Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, NITDA’s Director General, highlighted the growing importance of data as the “currency” of the digital economy. “The issue of having something home-grown is very important because data drives everything in the digital age,” Abdullahi said. He was represented by Mr. Oladejo Olawumi, Director of Information Technology Infrastructure Solutions, who emphasized that data security and privacy are essential to ensuring Nigeria’s digital sovereignty.
Empowering Innovators and Entrepreneurs
The Digital Nigeria Innovation Challenge was organized by NITDA’s Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI). It provided a platform for Nigerian tech entrepreneurs to showcase groundbreaking ideas. The event aligns with NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) 2.0 pillars. Part of its objectives includes fostering digital literacy, cultivating talent, and nurturing an innovative entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Abdullahi encouraged participants to leverage the Nigeria Startup Act (NSA) to secure funding and connect with angel investors to bring their ideas to life. “The Nigeria Startup Act enables you to develop your solutions and meet investors who can support your journey,” he said.
Innovation Nests: A Catalyst for Growth
As part of its commitment to fostering indigenous innovation, NITDA announced the establishment of “Innovation Nests” in three states. There are plans to expand to six more by the year’s end. These world-class centers will feature spaces for work, leisure, and networking, designed to inspire creativity and attract global investment.
“These centres will offer spaces to collaborate, relax, and connect with global investors,” Abdullahi stated, adding, “Whether you win today or not, this platform is a step toward achieving your dreams. Nigeria has the talent, and NITDA is here to ensure that talent is nurtured and celebrated.”
ONDI’s Vision for Nigeria’s Tech Ecosystem
Ms. Victoria Fabunmi, National Coordinator of ONDI, emphasized the significance of the challenge in advancing Nigeria’s tech ecosystem. She described the event as an opportunity for participants to identify opportunities and address gaps in the nation’s innovation landscape.
“This event highlights groundbreaking ideas and fosters collaboration within Nigeria’s tech ecosystem,” Fabunmi stated. She reiterated that the challenge aligns with the Ministry’s blueprint pillars of Knowledge, Innovation, and Policy.
Driving Nigeria’s Digital Economy Forward
NITDA’s initiatives underscore its vision of positioning Nigeria as a global leader in the digital economy. By championing data sovereignty, promoting digital innovation, and supporting indigenous talent, the agency is paving the way for a thriving digital future.
