The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has applauded the recent decision by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to diversify the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computer Science program into four specialized fields: artificial intelligence, network & cloud computing, software & web development, and cybersecurity & data protection.

According to NITDA in a statement signed by its Head, Corporate Affairs and External Relations, Mrs Hadiza Umar, this strategic move is not only transformative for Nigeria’s IT sector but also signifies a profound shift in preparing Nigerian graduates with essential skills crucial for navigating the digital revolution. It places polytechnics at the forefront of cultivating young Nigerians capable of addressing specific challenges and leveraging vast opportunities in emerging technologies.

“NITDA sees this as a substantial step in fostering the growth of the IT sector and enhancing the capabilities of the nation’s workforce. It addresses skills gaps identified through the IT Skills Gap Assessment in collaboration with CCHub, highlighting 12 high-demand IT skills in Nigeria and globally.
“Recognizing the potential of AI, Network and Cloud Computing, Software and Web Development, as well as Cybersecurity and Data Protection, NITDA has established the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and the Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI) to nurture talent and equip interns and NYSC members with the necessary skills for their digital journey.
“Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, underscores the importance of collaboration between educational institutions, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies for the successful implementation of these specialized fields.
“NITDA expresses gratitude to the NBTE for its vision and commitment to advancing technical education in Nigeria. It advocates for a paradigm shift in educational approaches, urging institutions to proactively integrate digital literacy into their curriculum structures.
