Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships to move Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda forward. In a meeting with a delegation from TikTok at the agency’s office in Abuja, Abdullahi reiterated the necessity for creating a safe and inclusive online environment conducive to both human and Artificial Intelligence (AI) practices in the country.

The discussion centred on aligning efforts to bolster national security for peace and prosperity, a priority area outlined by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The NITDA and TikTok meeting underscored the potential for fruitful collaboration between NITDA and TikTok to drive Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda forward, creating opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth.

The NITDA boss emphasized the significance of content moderation strategies to tackle online challenges such as hate speech, misinformation, and cyberbullying, especially in safeguarding minors across the country.

With the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries already in place, he highlighted its role in ensuring digital safety according to global best practices and content moderation to enhance security.

Collaboration among organisations for the realisation of mutual objectives, particularly in service delivery and national advancement is vital said Abdullahi as he outlined key areas where leveraging platforms like TikTok can advance Nigeria’s digital literacy, capacity building, knowledge sharing, and training efforts while curbing misinformation and promoting digital safety.

He further listed how TikTok provides a platform for creative expression through filters, stickers, and editing tools, with entertainment, comedy, and informational videos gaining significant traction. TikTok has become a launchpad for influencers and trends that can go viral, contributing to Nigeria’s digital ecosystem, he added.

Mrs. Tokunbo Ibrahim, Head of Government Regulation and Public Policy at TikTok Nigeria and West Africa, lauded NITDA as a critical stakeholder in Nigeria’s digital economy sector. She praised NITDA’s initiatives and policies that align with TikTok’s objectives, particularly in providing opportunities for Nigerians to market, sell, and export their products, services, and talents globally.

Ibrahim highlighted collaborations between TikTok and projects like the Africa Creator Hub, which supports and empowers tech creators, and the African Mall initiative, which promotes African products and services to the world. She emphasized TikTok’s commitment to online safety and its efforts to equip creators with the information and tools they need to thrive in their activities while securing the cyber space.
