The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has emphasized that registering for the National Identification Number (NIN) is crucial for accessing Federal Government social services. Speaking at a National Identity Day event in Awka, Chika Ogbonna, Director of NIMC’s Anambra Area Office, urged residents to prioritize NIN registration to be included in the national database.

Ogbonna highlighted the numerous benefits of having a NIN, stating, “NIN is the gateway for Nigerians to access Federal Government’s social services and interventions.” He assured residents that NIMC offices across the state are open to handle new registrations and data updates.

With offices in Awka and 21 Local Government Area Secretariats, NIMC is committed to ensuring all citizens and legal residents, from birth, are captured in the system. Ogbonna also called on parents and hospitals to register newborns at birth and warned against multiple registrations.

While the issuance of plastic NIN cards may take time, Ogbonna emphasized that the most critical aspect is obtaining the unique identification number itself.
