The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has blamed the inaccessibility of its verification portal on maintenance exercise being conducted by the ID agency.

Site maintenance is a routine exercise by operators of networks and other tech platforms to ensure service optimisation. This usually impacts on access and could lead to partial or total shut down of services.

In a statement available on its verifiable Facebook handle, NIMC advised Nigerians to make use of the alternative tokenisation verification platform pending the conclusion of the maintenance.

It assured that verification and authentication services will be restored on its portal once the maintenance is concluded.

By law, all telecom operators, Nigerian Immigration Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, banks and other organisations must use the NIMC platform to verify the National Identity Number (NIN) of their customers before attending to them.

NIN is the first requirement before all standard services can be offered by those organisations. Ā

The NIN Verification Service (NVS) has been critical to enable other organisations carry out their routine services.

Ā Because the NIMC Portal has been ā€˜Temporarily Unavailableā€™ it has made it impossible for standard services including SIM swaps by telcos or passport processing to be carried out by immigration authorities. Banks cannot open new accounts or proceed with high-risk transactions for customers without conducting a NVS. Ā
