Nigerians and nationals of other countries stand to benefit from a new learning web window to acquire degrees in computer related courses.
A pioneering online degree in computer science will open up the subject to a new generation of students previously “shut out” from this area of learning, according to Coursera, one of the partners delivering the course.
The new online BSc Computer Science programme is being delivered collaboratively by Goldsmiths, University of London, the online learning platform Coursera and the University of London.
Coursera’s Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Maggioncalda, explained that the innovative course will create new openings and opportunities for those who may have not considered computer science as an academic or career choice.
Jeff Maggioncalda said: “As I look at the University of London, and I look at Goldsmiths, and the really creative, yet scientific, approach that they take to a wide range of topics, I am sure that this degree in computer science will meet the needs of many people around the world.”
He added: “The demand for computer science, and the number of jobs that will be created for people who have technical skills is unprecedented. The ability of Goldsmiths to teach the world how to use computers and technology to provide opportunities in careers, as well as in new services to serve the world, is a really wonderful opportunity.”
On the uniqueness of this degree programme, Jeff Maggioncalda explained how the combination of the technology provided by Coursera as a platform, and the University of London’s long tradition of delivering distance and flexible learning, allows for both digital and on-the-ground experiential learning through the University’s global network of Recognised Teaching Centres, thus combining “the best of both worlds”.
Of his interaction with the academics at Goldsmiths, Jeff Maggioncalda described it as “thrilling”. He added: “I personally have been learning about music theory, I’ve been learning about the piano, and I’ve been composing music. I’ve never met a group of people who are so diverse in their passions, and interests… I think what we’re going to be doing with this computer science degree is to fill it with art as well.”
