Data subscribers in Nigeria are soon to get respite from automatic forfeiture of their unused data. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) plans to have Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) offer subscribers a 14 days window allow consumers roll over their unused data even when they do not renew at the expiration of the data plan.
Under the current data regime, unused data are automatically forfeited if consumers fail to renew their data subscription. But as part of the spirit that drives its declaration of 2017 as ‘Year Of Nigerian Telecom Consumer, the regulator says it will “soon issue a direction to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to allow 14 days window for telecom service consumers to roll over their unused data even when they do not renew at the expiration of the data plan.”
Also, the number of subscribers using the ‘Do Not Disturb (DND)’ had risen from 500,000 to 10 million within eight months to underscore the success of the crusade against the DND by the NCC as part of the overall goals to protect subscribers under the NCC’s 2017 ‘Year Of Nigerian Telecom Consumer’ campaign.
The Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Commission, Prof. Umar Danbatta, stated this recently in Port Harcourt at the programme commemorating The NCC Day at the Port Harcourt International Trade Fair, where he was represented by NCC’s Head of Projects, Mr. Bashir Idris.
Since the launch of its ‘2017 – Year Of Nigerian Telecom Consumer, the NCC has sought to thicken the value that consumers get from operators and also created a deeper sense of awareness among consumers on their rights as subscribers.
