The announcement was made in Abuja during a joint briefing by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. This is part of discussions on implementing and enforcing updated immigration protocols.
Visas online without visiting embassies or consulates
The Nigerian e-Visa will allow foreign nationals to apply for visas online without visiting embassies or consulates. Applicants will complete a digital form, upload required documents, pay visa fees, and receive their visa electronically via email. The e-visa can be printed or stored digitally and presented upon entry into Nigeria.
“This marks a new era in Nigeria’s immigration system,” said Tunji-Ojo. “We are removing bottlenecks and ensuring that people can obtain a Nigerian visa without lobbying anyone. We want to open our borders to the world while safeguarding our national security.”
The Minister highlighted the establishment of a centralized visa approval center at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) headquarters. He added that immigration officers have received extensive training and are now integrated with major global criminal record databases, including Interpol, to enhance background checks.
Boosting tourism, encouraging foreign investment
The e-Visa is designed to support purposes such as tourism, business, and transit, aligning Nigeria with global travel standards. By adopting this digital solution, the government seeks to boost tourism, encourage foreign investment, and present Nigeria as a welcoming destination with efficient border control processes.
To ensure a seamless rollout, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) have formed a joint implementation team. The group will develop the operational framework, regulatory guidelines, and enforcement protocols for the new system.
