Passport Renewal Goes Digital by April 2025

Tunji-Ojo spoke with the media in Abuja. He revealed that from April 2025, Nigerians will be able to renew their passports both domestically and abroad without physically visiting the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) offices. “The only reason you currently visit the NIS office is for biometric capture. But the world has gone so digital that physical visits are no longer necessary,” the Minister explained.

He further emphasised the advanced nature of the system: “In fact, what you do virtually can even have better resolution than physical capture. The process will go live on April 1, 2025, but before that, we will conduct extensive testing.”

Phased Rollout, Starting with Nigerians in the Diaspora

The new system will initially be rolled out to Nigerians living abroad, with plans for a nationwide launch to follow. The NIS is aiming for a fully automated passport application process. It will allow applicants to complete all pre-biometric tasks from the comfort of their homes. This includes uploading passport photographs and submitting supporting documents online.

Transforming Passport Applications through Innovation

The head of the NIS expressed excitement about the historic step forward: “We are making history, and it brings me great joy to see our efforts bear fruit.” He also thanked stakeholders for their contributions to the success of the project.

With the introduction of the contactless biometric system, Nigeria aims to position itself at the forefront of digital transformation in public services, significantly improving the ease and security of passport applications for citizens.
