In an effort to equip young minds with essential digital skills, cybersecurity awareness, and ethical internet practices, the Nigeria TeenTech Mentorship Programme was recently hosted by the Child Protective Initiative Against Cybercrime, with Delmwa Gogwim leading the event.

The program provided secondary school students with in-depth education on both the opportunities and risks of the internet, emphasizing the importance of ethical technology use and responsible digital citizenship.

Delivering a keynote address, the Commissioner for Science and Innovation, Plateau State,  Dr. Cletus Bako Shurkuk, underscored the importance of responsible internet usage in shaping the future of Nigerian youth.

“As future leaders, the knowledge you gain today is a foundation for success. Many of us never had this kind of opportunity growing up. The internet is a vast space, filled with both good and bad. Today, you’re being guided to stay on the right track. Use the internet to learn, grow, and become problem-solvers in your community. Society needs young minds like yours to create long-lasting solutions to the challenges we face.”

Encouraging students to embrace technology as a tool for growth rather than crime, he advised:

“A problem solver is always valued. Be someone others can benefit from.”

With cybercrime on the rise among Nigerian youth, initiatives like the Nigeria TeenTech Mentorship Programme are critical in steering students toward ethical digital practices and ensuring Nigeria develops a tech-savvy, law-abiding, and innovative future generation.

  5. Be mindful of their digital footprint, as employers scrutinize online activities during hiring processes.

A representative from NASCO Foods educated students on the importance of digital marketing, positioning it as a valuable skill in today’s economy.

The Risks of Reckless Online Behavior

Students were warned about the long-term consequences of their digital actions, with a strong emphasis on protecting their online reputation.

“Your online presence matters. Be mindful of what you share, as it can influence your future career opportunities,” said Lewis, CEO of SBTS.

The session highlighted:

  1. The dangers of cyberbullying and online harassment.
  2. How negative digital footprints can affect employment and scholarships.
  3. The importance of privacy settings to safeguard personal data.
