The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, in partnership with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and Data.Org , has launched the Responsible Data Management Course. This free online course aims to equip public servants with essential knowledge and skills in ethical data management.

Designed to bridge the theoretical aspects of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 with practical knowledge of data rights and responsibilities, the course helps public servants navigate data management complexities and mitigate vulnerabilities in public service. Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “This partnership is the first in a series of engagements planned to equip civil servants with the necessary knowledge and skills for operating in a rapidly evolving digital environment.”

The Responsible Data Management Course targets Heads of IT, Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), Data Protection Officers (DPOs), IT & Cybersecurity Personnel, and other officers involved in data processing and privacy within Federal and State MDAs. The course aims to train 10,000 public servants, offering a concise, self-paced online learning resource that can be completed in 2-3 hours. It will be available in four cohorts, ensuring broad accessibility and continuous learning opportunities. Certificates will be issued upon completion.

Course Schedule:

  • Cohort 1: June 19 – July 17, 2024
  • Cohort 2: July 22 – August 17, 2024
  • Cohort 3: August 19 – September 14, 2024
  • Cohort 4: September 16 – October 12, 2024

Registration opens on May 28, 2024, via https://dmc.ndpc.gov.ng.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, NC/CEO of NDPC, emphasized the growing importance of addressing privacy issues arising from emerging technologies. “The Responsible Data Management Course is one of the initiatives designed to equip Nigerian public servants with relevant skills to be globally competitive,” he said.

Dr. Uyi Stewart, Chief Data and Technological Officer at Data.Org, added, “The course provides public servants with foundational data science knowledge and skills, helping them to understand the ethical handling of data, safeguard individual privacy rights, and ensure effective data governance.”

By exploring the principles of responsible data handling and the lifecycle of data management, this course prepares public servants to make informed decisions that reflect both the letter and spirit of the law, enhancing trust and confidence in public institutions. This initiative underscores the Federal Ministry’s commitment to advancing the digitization of public services and integrating technology into daily interactions.
