The Presidential Project 774 aims to expand access through VSAT digital installations in all 774 local government areas (LGAs) across Nigeria. NIGCOMSAT is tasked with connecting the headquarters of 579 local government area councils using the Ka-band network asset of the NigComSat-1R Communication satellite, while another agency will handle the remaining LGAs.
First phase targets 45 local councils
The first phase of the project targets 45 local government area councils in Borno, Cross River, Imo, Kogi, Kwara, Ogun, Sokoto, and Zamfara states.
Aisha Bantam, Head of the Corporate Affairs Department, reports that the first phase is nearing completion.
“In Imo, Zamfara, and Cross River states, VSAT installation in all allocated local government councils for the first phase has been completed 100%.
“Meanwhile, in Kogi, the designated local government councils in the same phase are 90% complete. With work set to resume after the Sallah break, the technical team will begin work in all assigned local government councils in Ogun and Kwara states,” she stated.
However, in Borno state, NIGCOMSAT awaits the availability of logistics, assigned local government councils, and contact persons before proceeding.
Project 774 LG Connectivity in a capsule
According to the government’s official blueprint: Project 774 LG Connectivity is designed to address limited internet and digital access by connecting all 774 Local Government secretariats across Nigeria to the internet.
This ambitious project, which will be co-anchored by Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited and Galaxy Backbone, under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, is aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the ministry’s strategic blueprint.
The overarching goal of the project is to foster inclusive development and access to digital public infrastructure in government offices located all over Nigeria, including the most remote areas of the country that may have been previously underserved or unserved.
