National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has officially inaugurated the National Privacy Week Working Group in Abuja to set the tone for Nigeria’s preparation for the World Privacy Day in January, 2023.

‘Data Privacy Day’ is global event

The ‘Data Privacy Day’ is an international event that occurs every year on 28 January. The purpose of Data Privacy Day is to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices across the world.

The working group which comprises members of staff of the Bureau and stakeholders are mandated to draw up programmes for the 2023 National Privacy Week and one year anniversary of NDPB.

Nigeria officially joined the rest of the world January 2020 to celebrate the World Privacy Day with a National Data Privacy Awareness Week to enlighten Nigerians on the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), how it affects them and impacts on business among other sectors.

2023 Privacy Awareness Week

The 2023 Awareness Week is expected to include overall theme(s) for the Privacy Week; a Media outreach; data privacy orientations across public and private organisations; public workshops; and national symposium on data protection amongst others.

Part of the objectives of the Privacy Week is to make citizens aware of their data privacy rights; raise awareness on data assets, and help to address security and privacy concerns.

The NDPR is currently the operational rules on privacy but there are already plans for a Data Protection Act to provide statutory teeth for privacy and related practices.
