The Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) has expressed commitment to work with Chinese IT and telecom giant, Huawei to help build capacity and other initiatives that will better kit the commission to deliver on its mandate.
The National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, while receiving senior officials of Huawei in Abuja recently, said the NDPB is committed to partnerships that will help to further drive Nigeria’s agenda for data protection across sectors.

Olatunji added that the role of the bureau is to ensure that data security for all Nigerians and to ensure that all organisations in Nigeria comply with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), Nigeria’s principal legislation on data protection.
Led by the Global Chief Government Industry Scientist at Huawei, Hong-Eng Koh, the ICT infrastructure and smart devices company, expressed support for the Nigerian government as the country seeks to leverage new opportunities in the global data economy.
Nigeria’s increasing shift to digital economy makes it critical to address increasing challenges of data security, privacy and protection from legal and technology and other perspectives.
Koh assured the NDPB of Huawei’s support to drive its mandate as the country’s data watchdog.
Olatunji explained that “the bureau was established to ensure the implementation of the NDPR to safeguard the rights, freedom and privacy of citizens as well as ensure that the country has a principal legislation in that regard,”
According to him, the bureau was now embarking on an aggressive awareness drive with stakeholders in order to get everyone involved.
He added that the bureau was focusing on making sure that all actors in the data protection chain including data processors and data controllers adhere to the NDPR in line with best global practice.
