The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has put together guidelines for the use of Television White Spaces (TVWS) to benefit rural broadband connectivity in Nigeria.
The regulatory body in charge of Nigeria’s communications industry said that it had developed the guidelines in collaboration with Nigeria’s National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the country’s primary broadcast regulator, and it is currently consulting with various industry stakeholders to present the final approved guidelines.
According to the draft document that was made public, NCC defines Television Whitespaces as unassigned spectrum between broadcast TV channels in the 470 to 694 MHz region of the UHF frequency band to possibly provide internet access underserved areas of the country.
Recent developments in technology have proven that unused spectrum of buffer channels can be used to deliver broadband internet access while also operating harmoniously with the surrounding TV channels.
Since the pilot test of TVWS technologies in Cambridge in 2011 by a team comprising of BBC, Microsoft, Samsung, Nokia and six other allies, TVWS is fast becoming a notable emerging technology in the mission to bridge the digital divide and connect remote communities around the world.
