Nigeria has a new chief taxman as President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the composition of a new board for the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

The new board will be led by Muhammad M. Nami as chairman.  He replaces Babatunde Fowler, whose term of office expired today.

A statement issued by the presidency in Abuja today and signed by presidential media aide, Garba Shehu, described the new chairman as a renowned tax consultant.

Taxman will oversee taxing digital economy

Nami will oversee Nigeria’s plan to implement a novel tax regime for digital services and products from 2020.

Nami’s appointment is subject to Senate confirmation.

Fowler failed to get approval for a second tenure as has been predicted in some quarters. He is to hand over to the most senior director on the board, who will take charge, pending the senate confirmation of the new board.
