This was disclosed by NACAN President, Alhaji Rabiu Sani, during a press briefing on Tuesday in Lagos. He noted that the initiative would be a key focus at the association’s upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM), scheduled for December 4, 2024, in Abuja.
The AGM, themed “Building a Smarter, More Sustainable AFTN/AMHS through AI Collaboration,” will bring together key aviation stakeholders. They include the governors of Akwa Ibom, Kano, Yobe, and Rivers states. Stakeholders are expected to deliberate on the integration of AI technologies into Nigeria’s airspace management systems.
Industry Leaders and Experts to Participate
Mr. Umar Farouk, Managing Director of the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), will is chief host of the event. Additionally, captains of aviation parastatals and seasoned international experts will contribute to the discourse.
One of the highlights will be a presentation by Mr. Tom Oteyo, a seasoned aviator from Nairobi, alongside other international discussants. The experts will share insights on leveraging AI for smarter air traffic solutions.
Enhancing Ground-Ground Communication Systems
Sani emphasized the critical roles of AFTN and AMHS in aviation safety and efficiency. He described AFTN as a low-speed communication network. The AFTN is responsible for the majority of ground-ground data exchange under the purview of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
Meanwhile, AMHS serves as a modern standard for Air Traffic Services Message Handlin. It helps to facilitate the exchange of essential messages such as flight plans and meteorological data. Integrating AI into these systems aims to revolutionize operations, ensuring smarter, faster, and more sustainable communication processes.
Driving Innovation in Air Traffic Communication
The integration of AI into AFTN/AMHS aligns with global trends to modernize air traffic communication systems. By incorporating advanced technologies, NACAN seeks to enhance the safety, reliability, and sustainability of Nigeria’s airspace management.
The AGM will provide a platform for collaboration and knowledge-sharing among aviation leaders, government officials, and industry experts to chart a forward-thinking path for the nation’s aviation sector.
