MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest telecommunications operator, has successfully renewed its 800MHz spectrum licence for an additional 10 years. This followed approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). MTN’s renewal extends its right to operate on the 800MHz spectrum band until December 31, 2034. With the renewal, MTN will be reinforcing its long-term commitment to delivering high-quality 4G connectivity and network coverage across Nigeria.

In a regulatory filing to the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), MTN Nigeria disclosed that the NCC has renewed its first 800MHz spectrum band licence (Channel 1) for 10 years. Also, it has extended its second 800MHz spectrum band licence (Channel 2). This was originally set to expire on December 31, 2030—but has been extended by an additional four years. The harmonized expiry date of December 31, 2034, ensures a streamlined renewal process for both licences moving forward.

As Nigeria’s leading mobile network operator, MTN Nigeria serves over 80 million subscribers, commanding a 51.09% market share as of October 2024. The company remains a dominant player in Africa and beyond, with operations in over 20 countries, including select Asian markets such as Syria.

Globally, MTN had 289.1 million subscribers as of December 2022, with Nigeria being its largest market, generating approximately one-third of the company’s total revenue.
