The rebranding, according to Egerton Idehen, MTN’s Chief Broadband Officer, marks a major milestone in the company’s mission to drive Nigeria’s digital transformation by improving internet access through high-speed fibre-optic infrastructure.

“The launch of FibreX reiterates our dedication to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation journey,” said Idehen. “By enhancing our infrastructure and services, we aim to bridge the digital divide and foster inclusive growth.”

FibreX is expected to play a key role in supporting the Federal Government’s ambitious plan to expand national fibre capacity from 35,000 km to 125,000 km. MTN aims to lay an additional 90,000 km of fibre-optic cable, further accelerating internet penetration and digital innovation across the country.

Customer-Centric Rebrand with a Digital Edge

While the underlying Fibre to the Home (FTTH) infrastructure remains unchanged, the new name—FibreX—was selected to provide a modern, relatable, and emotionally resonant identity for users in connected areas.

“The goal is to educate and excite consumers in home-passed locations about the benefits of FibreX,” Idehen added, highlighting the telco’s aim to improve customer awareness and satisfaction.

With Nigeria’s internet economy poised for growth, FibreX will help unlock faster, more reliable broadband for homes, SMEs, and large organizations, supporting applications from remote work to online learning and streaming.

MTN Nigeria Leads the Broadband Charge

As of January 2025, MTN Nigeria commands a 51.7% market share, with 87.5 million subscribers, reinforcing its leadership in the country’s telecommunications industry. The introduction of FibreX further strengthens its position in the fixed broadband space and complements efforts to close Nigeria’s digital access gap.

Idehen emphasized that MTN’s FibreX broadband service will help drive the broader national digital agenda and deliver tangible value to users across urban and suburban areas.
