Two Nigerians, Shoyinka Shodunke and Adia Sowho have joined the executive team of MTN Nigeria as the telecommunications giant celebrates 20 years of operations in a market that has become its largest on the continent with more than 73 million subscribers.

 “We further localised our predominantly Nigerian management team with the appointment of Nigerians to two key senior positions (Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) and Chief Information Officer CIO) previously held by expatriates,” said MTN Nigeria CEO, Karl Toriola in a briefing on the company’s unaudited results for the half-year ended 30 June 2021.

Toriola took over as CEO less than a year to further consolidate on MTN’s localisation of executive leadership of its Nigerian operations.

An appointment of firsts

Shodunke, the first Nigerian to be appointed CIO, joined MTN Nigeria in 2001. He has a Bachelor of Technology in Mathematics Statistic/Operations Research from the Federal University of Technology Yola, Nigeria,

Sowho is the first female CMO inside MTN and until her appointment, was CEO of Thrive Agric, Nigeria. A holder of Bachelor degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from University of Sheffield, UK, she has extensive top management experience including years at Etisalat Nigeria as Director, Digital Business.
