Meta has announced the winners of the 2023 Llama Impact Grants and Llama Impact Innovation Awards, highlighting transformative uses of its Llama 2 and Llama 3 AI models to tackle global social challenges. Launched in October 2023, the program attracted over 800 submissions from more than 90 countries, focusing on innovative applications in education, environmental sustainability, and technological innovation.

Llama Impact Grants

Among the grant recipients, Digital Green and its partner One Acre Fund secured $500,000 USD to develop Farmer Chat, an AI chatbot that will provide multilingual, customized agricultural advisory services to small-scale farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. By leveraging Llama’s conversational AI, the tool will deliver real-time agricultural insights in languages like Swahili, Hindi, and Kikuyu.

Runner-up Jacaranda Health received $300,000 USD to enhance its digital health tool, PROMPTS, which uses AI to support maternal and newborn health across Kenya, Ghana, and Eswatini.

Llama Impact Innovation Awards

Meta also announced winners of the Llama Impact Innovation Awards for projects driving innovative solutions with Llama models, providing up to $35,000 USD in funding, mentorship, and ad credits. Awardees include:

  • HelpMum, for developing Vax-Llamamodel, an AI-driven chatbot offering reliable vaccination information. HelpMum created Vax-Llamamodel—an AI-driven, open-source model designed to provide reliable vaccination information.
  • Tanzania AI Community, which created Twiga, a chatbot assistant helping teachers generate tailored educational content.
  • Flow Informatics, whose phosoAI chatbot provides real-time food price data and agricultural advice to combat food insecurity in Malawi.

Meta continues its commitment to open-source AI, with applications for the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants open until November 22, 2024.
