The LASIMRA delegation, led by Chief Executive Officer Prince Oyekanmi Elegushi, engaged with NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, and key industry stakeholders to discuss critical issues affecting the telecom sector in Lagos State.
The meeting was further enriched by the presence of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), including its Chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, and Publicity Secretary, Mr. Damian Udeh.
Key Discussions: Infrastructure Security, Fibre Deployment, and Regulation
The high-level engagement focused on pressing challenges within the industry, including:
- Telecom Infrastructure Security & Protection – Strengthening measures to prevent vandalism, theft, and damage to essential assets.
- Tower Enumeration Project – A comprehensive audit aimed at identifying distressed telecom infrastructure across Lagos.
- Fibre Deployment & Damage to Public Assets – LASIMRA raised concerns over reckless excavation by some operators and reinforced the need for strict penalties to preserve public infrastructure.
- Regulatory Synergy & Policy Alignment – The need for a unified framework involving NCC, LASIMRA, and other stakeholders to streamline oversight, licensing, and enforcement policies.
“LASIMRA is committed to ensuring the sustainability and security of telecom infrastructure in Lagos. Our collaboration with NCC is a crucial step toward fostering a more efficient and digitally inclusive city,” said Prince Oyekanmi Elegushi, CEO of LASIMRA.
Tower Enumeration Project: A Game-Changer for Telecom Oversight
A key highlight of the discussion was the Tower Enumeration Project, a major initiative by LASIMRA designed to:
- Audit & map telecom towers across Lagos – Identifying weak or distressed structures.
- Enhance urban planning – Ensuring optimal placement of telecom infrastructure.
- Improve connectivity – Addressing coverage gaps and improving service delivery.
- Regulate compliance – Holding operators accountable for infrastructure maintenance.
The initiative is expected to improve the quality of telecom services, reduce downtime, and enhance network resilience across Lagos State.
“A well-regulated telecom industry benefits everyone—from businesses to individual users. This collaboration with LASIMRA and NCC will ensure best practices in infrastructure deployment and management,” said ALTON Chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo.
A Unified Approach for Improved Telecom Services
The NCC, LASIMRA, and ALTON agreed on the importance of a coordinated approach to:
- Enforce strict compliance with telecom regulations in Lagos.
- Implement protective measures against vandalism and infrastructure degradation.
- Streamline permitting processes for operators to encourage investment.
- Ensure Lagos remains a leader in digital connectivity and smart city development.
LASIMRA commended the NCC for its continued support and pledged to work closely with all stakeholders to build a more digitally connected Lagos.
