Lagos State is leading other states in Nigeria as the state with the highest number of social media engagement with 115, 000 followers on Twitter and 244, 624 on Facebook.

Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara states trail other states to sit at the bottom of the table with 0% engagement and reach on the social media platforms.

Lagos has the highest online/social media interactions to live up to its status as Nigeria’s most cosmopolitan city as well as commercial capital with over 15 million people.

The facts were unveiled in a new report by Instinct Wave, an indigenous media,  consulting and event firm.

The report, titled Nigeria Public Sector, Social Media Report, which was put out recently by Instinct Wave on the performance of Nigerian government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs)  documents online and social media engagements of citizens by MDAs from October 2016 to February 2017.

The report also documents how states are using online platforms and social media to engage citizens as well as provide insights on governance and economic plans for local and international audience.

Social media is averagely accepted among these government agencies, notes the Instinct Wave report which is aimed at fact checking the adoption of social media and engagement level within the public sector as a catalyst for driving a new and positive culture that supports high performance as well as leveraging the energy of a new generation.

“The use of social media applications has been averagely accepted in the Nigerian public sector. However, the acceptance and broader adoption of sophisticated tactics that go beyond information and education paradigm, such as true engagement or networking strategies are still in its infancy,” the report noted.

CEO of Instinct Wave, Mr. Akin Naphtal said the aim of the report is to shed more light on the mechanisms of the public sector in Nigeria and its use of the several social media platforms.

“Perception of the citizenry is bound to shift with this report. There will be adequate information to justify the reasons for communication gap and how information should be disseminated,” said Naphtal.
