The Lagos State Government (LASG) has launched a Traffic Management Solution (TMS), a handheld device for real-time capture of picture and video evidence of road traffic violations as they occur.

The device should further help the state of more than 20 million people and daily heavy vehicular traffic to checkmate excesses of traffic offenders.

“The innovation will aid the eradication of fine-payment controversy between traffic law enforcement officers and violators, as only electronic payments guarantee the clearance of a violation from the violators’ list,” said Commissioner for Transportation, Frederic Oladeinde.

He said the TMS is a traffic law compliance initiative, adding: “An offender may choose to visit a traffic court and present the violation number for the violation he/she wishes to challenge.”

The launch of the device reflects Lagos increasing focus to be a Smart City driven by technology and innovation even in the management of human and vehicular traffic, said Oladeinde.

According to him, government through the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) remains committed to ensuring compliance to traffic rules and being able to book violators as one of the ways to resolve perennial traffic gridlocks resulting from blatant abuse of traffic regulations.

The TMS “will help in electronic verification of the authenticity of driving licences, vehicle licences and number plates, which will significantly assist in achieving the goal of clamp down on motorists with fake licences and number plates.”

Through the provision of video and picture evidence, the TMS device will minimize the need for traffic law enforcement officials to have any physical contact whatsoever with traffic offenders on the road significantly aiding transparency in exposing violations, said Oladeinde.

His words: “Reports of physical abuse of our traffic management personnel will be eliminated, as there will be no need for face to face resolutions and will create a strong deterrence to traffic offences, which will significantly reduce the traffic situation in the state.”
