The Lagos State Government has denounced as fake news social media reports suggesting that there are plans by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to outlaw the position of Eze Ndi-Igbo in Lagos among other actions targeting non-indigenes even as the 2019 elections draw near.
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan revealed in an official statement that the report was totally false and ludicrous. Bamigbetan said the report must have been conceived by enemies of the state to cause disaffection and chaos among various people as Lagos is home to virtually all of Nigeria’s over 300 ethnic groups.
“While we would have opted to totally ignore such crass report, we have chosen to set the records straight for unsuspecting members of the public who might be tempted to believe such falsehood.
“For emphasis, there is no record anywhere of the governor making such remarks and we dare the faceless authors to come out with any evidence otherwise. This is certainly the handiwork of enemies of Lagos State whose sole aim is to distort the existing harmonious relationship among ethnic groups in the State.
“They have totally failed in this attempt. Besides, in this season of politics, it is expected that those seeking to gain mileage would stop at nothing and cling to any straw just to score cheap points,” said Bamigbetan.
Bamigbetan said Lagos remains committed to the ideal of promoting a greater Nigeria even as he spoke on the dangers of social media and fake news.
The commissioner implored members of the public to disregard the report and also urged security agencies to carry out an investigation on the matter while making sure that those responsible for the spread of fake news be brought to justice as it is calamitous to the state of the nation.
