rlg to produce 1.5 million laptops per year
rlg Communications has revealed plans to produce 1.5 million laptops a year in its factory in Osun State. The $20 million facility is designed to produce handset, PC, tablets and other mobile devices. It is expected to be commissioned in Q4 of 2013. According to Mr. Taiwo Latilo, Chief Operating Officer of rlg Communications, the plant is 85 percent completed. He stated that trainees from the rlg Communications Nigeria Limited and Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme Technology (OYESTECH) partnership programme would work at the plant, assembling phones, TV sets and computer appliances. Those who do not get employment at the assembling plant would work as sales, technical and operational staff in Osun and Lagos.
“For us, this is a mandate to revolutionise ICT in Africa and create one million jobs for the youths. In this regard, we have just commenced the construction of ‘HOPE City’ (an acronym for Home, Office, People and Environment), which is an ICT park modelled after Silicon Valley in America. That will be the first of its kind in Africa,” he added. The company had last year inked a partnership agreement with the Osun State government for a two-year period within which 20,000 people youths from the state would be trained on actual repairs, servicing, maintenance and assembling of mobile phones, computer technologies and other electronic equipment.
