Stakeholders in the telecom industry have opportunity to discuss their major challenges as the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) concludes plans to hold a special reception in honour of the Minister of Communications & Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami.
The reception is scheduled to hold Thursday, December 12, 2019 in Abuja and is designed to be a ‘Minister-Industry interaction allowing government and policy drivers engage closely with private sector players.
ATCON is the umbrella body for telecom companies in Nigeria and seeks to encourage stakeholders to harmonize ideas on addressing tension areas in the sector and creating a win-win value for all players in the industry, said ATCON’s president Olusola Teniola to IT Edge News in Abuja.
“Among the objectives of the event are to formally introduce the Honourable Minister of Communications to the captains of the industry; to give the industry the opportunity to meet with him and share some of the challenges that are impacting negatively on the telecom industry in Nigeria and to offer the Honourable Minister the opportunity to share his plans for the industry with the relevant stakeholders,’ said a statement by ATCON in Lagos.

The telecommunication industry is presently considered to be the fastest growing sector in the Nigerian economy and contributes over 12% to the national GDP. But it is an industry facing series of challenges for which operators have consistently sought government’s intervention
Tension areas include telecom infrastructures security, multiple taxations, right of ways, call diversion, high data charges, and issues of illegal data depleting, among others.
