There are indications that President Bola Tinubu has given the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, approval for the dissolution of the governing boards of federal parastatals, agencies and institutions.

There are also signals that the Presidency plans to implement aspects of the Stephen Oronsaye panel’s report on the reform of the civil service strengthening belief in some quarters that government wants to merge some agencies to save cost and make them more efficient.

Merger will impact agencies in Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy

The Oronsaye committee submitted an 800-page report on April 16, 2012. The committee recommended the abolition and merger of 102 government agencies and parastatals, while some were listed to be self-funding. Some of the institutions listed for merger and abolition include those in the Ministry of Communications (now renamed Communications & Digital Economy)

“Some are of the opinions that the Oronsaye report is out-dated. But very senior advisers within the government are convinced that aspects of the report could salvage the public service, make it more result-focused and cut down huge waste,” a person conversant with the matter told IT Edge News.Africa in Abuja.

Worried by the increasing financial burden of what many deemed ‘a bloated and inefficient civil services’, Nigeria’s immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari set up two sub-committees to review the Oronsaye report with plans to introduce “some fundamental changes in the structure of our country’s civil service.”

But the Buhari government failed to embark on the changes after the sub-committees submitted their reviews.
