Ghana film has been having a resurgence lately. After the earlier success of the Nkrumah era when our movies took to the global stage, not much has happened.

However, in recent times there has been a plethora of titles that have made impact, for examples; “Children of the Mountain” that won the best new director at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2016, “The Burial of Kojo” that took an award at the Luxor African Film festival and most recently “The Fisherman” was the first Ghanaian film to premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.
These are but a few, in fact there have been several films from our industry that have punched above our perceived weight to put our industry on the global map. At the tail end of 2024 two films made strong waves; Shirley Frimpong-Manso’s “Two of a Kind”, which premiered in London, England and Peter Sedufia’s “One Night Guests”, shot in Nigeria has had audiences laughing across the sub-region.
Daring into science fiction
So, what’s new in 2025? Our filmmakers have not often dared to venture far from familiar genres, however, writer and director Majeed Sayibu dared to venture into science fiction. With Q-Vision Productions they embarked on “The B.A.T.U Project: ADAM THE FIRST”. The film stars Agbeko “Bex” Mortty, Naa Ashorkor, Majeed Suhuyini and the great Akorfa Edjeani as the Chairperson of the United African Federation.
ADAM THE FIRST
“The B.A.T.U. Project: ADAM THE FIRST”, tells the story of Adam (Bex). He is sent by the United African Federation to repopulate a new planet after an apocalyptic event on earth. Upon arrival, Adam discovers an earth entity that threatens the new planet’s existence. He must battle this entity to fulfil his mission and ensure the survival of humanity.
The film was shot on the salt fields of Sege in the Greater Accra region of Ghana, and in Bolgatanga in the Upper East region of the country. It gloriously captures the beautiful landscapes and makes it into an alien planet. The themes of Climate Change, Afrofuturism, S.T.E.M, Space Exploration come through the yearning to tell our own African stories.
Nominated for the BEACON Award
In the Science Fiction genre, the Miami International Science Fiction Film Festival (MiSciFi) is well known and respected. With our country’s first foray, “The B.A.T.U. Project: ADAM THE FIRST”, has been selected for this prestigious festival. Moreso, it has been nominated for the festival’s top honour, the BEACON Award. Should the film win the award, the country of origin is awarded the honour. Ghana is on course for a major strike in filmmaking. The awards ceremony takes place on the 18th and 19th of January 2025 in Miami, Florida, USA.
