Galaxy Backbone Limited says patronage by government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) has scaled up to about 60% in the last two years to underscore the expanding value of the publicly owned infrastructure enterprise in the marketplace.
Galaxy Backbone which turned 15 this year with a large public sector clients base, also announced an aggressive plan for collaborations with private sector players in order to be able to bring the benefits of digital infrastructure and services to a greater number of Nigerians and corporate entities.
Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Professor Muhammad Bello Abubakar, says there is more focus on connecting, collaborating, innovating and transforming the business of infrastructures and shared services across sectors.
“The future direction for the Galaxy Backbone is for the private sector to see us not as competitors but as enablers. We are trying to provide the environment that will enable them function well,” Professor Abubakar tells IT Edge News in Abuja.
He adds: “We are 15 years and a lot has been put in place since 2006…. It is fundamentally in 2020, I will say we try to see that we leverage the things we have put in place so as to work round the problem that came with the pandemic. I will say we have worked perfectly with the new normal to provide the requisite shared service infrastructure for the government.
“We have made it possible for the government to continue to operate without being distracted or encumbered by the attendant challenges of COVID-19.”

Abubakar says Galaxy is targeting to increase MDAs patronage to above 80% in the shortest possible period as government has already moved to get all public sector stakeholders address the peculiar challenges of connecting MDAs with efficient outcomes.
“The Galaxy has a mandate to take services to the door step of the MDAs…. If you are looking at the ICT infrastructure within the MDAs, their interests are not met because their existing infrastructure whether local wiring … or other devices in use are either outdated or faulty. This means that they cannot best enjoy the services from Galaxy Backbone,” he tells IT Edge News and says government is already working to resolve the end-point dilemmas. Once this happens, he expects an increased number of MDAs to become more enabled with digital infrastructure and services to scale up patronage for Galaxy in excess of 80%.
Remodeling on Galaxy 3.0
Since assuming office over a year ago, Professor Abubakar has worked on remodeling Galaxy Backbone to better achieve its mandate through new strategic thrust targeting to enhance its marketplace acceptance, improve its performance, widen its reach and rework its engagement of the market including bolstering partnerships with private sector operators.
All of these make up the Galaxy 3.0, a five-year blueprint at repositioning the 15 years old enterprise to ignite a positive transformation of MDAs and other economic actors across sectors in line with the national agenda for digital economy.
