The finance sector remains ahead of other sectors at 32.30% in terms of compliance to the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) even as industry record shows that data privacy audit compliance is on the rise in Nigeria across sectors.

The top sectors in compliance for 2022 shrank in value of percentage as other sectors grew aided by growing awareness to privacy issues and steady institutionalisation of data protection.

“Data protection is gaining momentum as the national culture of compliance increasingly becomes the norm,” said the National Commissioner/CEO, Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), Dr. Vincent Olatunji over the weekend in Abuja at the NDPB Anniversary Dinner/Award Night to sign off the Data Privacy and Protection Week in Nigeria.

“Data protection is on the rise in the private and public sectors. There is a commendable acceptance and willingness to implement data privacy in government ministries, departments and agencies,” said Dr. Olatunji .

Olatunji  commended the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami for his commitment to the data protection industry, the NDPB and the midwifing of the Data Protection Bill currently undergoing statutory processes to become an Act of Parliament.

He described Pantami who made a keynote remark during the event as the “father of data protection in Nigeria.”

For now, the NDPR is Nigeria’s primary data protection statute and provides the legal framework for data protection compliance requirements and managing breaches including the imposition of penalties for defaulters.

Since 25th January 2019 when it became the effective regulation for data protection compliance, all public and private entities that process the personal data of more than 1000 data subjects in a period of six months and 2000 data subjects in a period of 12 months must submit a Data Protection Audit Report to the data ombudsman.
