Our gathering not only marks the launch of a new website but also introduces a challenge that showcases the remarkable talent within the Plateau State Students’ community. Our theme today is ‘The Prospect of Emerging Technologies in the 21st Century.’
Before we delve into the exciting world of emerging technologies, let’s take a moment to reflect on the impressive history of technology in Plateau State, which traces its origins to this very institution. The University of Jos, renowned for its pioneering spirit, was among the first Nigerian universities to embrace ICT with the support of Carnegie Mellon. This marked the start of our journey into the digital age, and we, as students and professionals, have reaped the rewards.
This inspiration led me to establish nHub, the first innovation hub in Northern Nigeria, alongside a group of passionate change-makers. Subsequently, my role as the inaugural Director General of the Plateau State ICT Development Agency allowed me to launch groundbreaking programs like Code Plateau, reshaping the technology landscape of our state.
In this dynamic age of progress, the pace of technological advancement is breathtaking. Our society is becoming increasingly digital, interconnected, and automated, and the prospects of emerging technologies are nothing short of revolutionary. Today, I would like to share with you some insights into these technologies and the incredible opportunities they bring.
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: Imagine computers that can learn, adapt, and make decisions like humans. AI and machine learning are at the forefront of this technological wave, transforming healthcare, finance, education, and many other sectors. These technologies hold the potential to revolutionize industries and solve complex problems, from diagnosing diseases to predicting climate change.
Biotechnology: The intersection of biology and technology is giving rise to remarkable advancements in genomics, gene editing, and personalized medicine. With CRISPR-Cas9 and gene therapy, we have the power to eradicate genetic diseases and extend human lifespan, creating a healthier and more sustainable world.
Renewable Energy: As our planet faces climate challenges, renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and geothermal power are revolutionizing the energy sector. These technologies offer a cleaner, sustainable future, reducing our carbon footprint and mitigating the effects of climate change.
Blockchain and Cryptocurrency: Blockchain technology has disrupted the way we conduct financial transactions, data security, and even supply chain management. Cryptocurrencies have the potential to redefine the financial system, making it more accessible and decentralized.
Quantum Computing: Quantum computers have the potential to process vast amounts of data at speeds previously unimaginable. This technology can revolutionize fields like cryptography, drug discovery, and optimization problems, ushering in a new era of problem-solving.
Virtual and Augmented Reality: VR and AR are changing the way we perceive and interact with the world. They are not only transforming the gaming industry but also enhancing education, healthcare, and even remote work, creating immersive experiences like never before.
Internet of Things (IoT): IoT is connecting our physical world to the digital realm, allowing for smart homes, cities, and industries. It improves efficiency, reduces waste, and enhances our quality of life.
These emerging technologies are not just fascinating concepts. They are shaping our world, impacting every aspect of our lives, from the way we work and learn to how we communicate and interact. They offer tremendous opportunities and potential for innovation, progress, and addressing some of the most pressing challenges we face today.
“The 21st century is a time of rapid change, and the only way to stay ahead is by continuously updating and expanding our knowledge and skills.”
But, with great power comes great responsibility. As future leaders and innovators, it’s crucial for all of us to consider the ethical, social, and environmental implications of these technologies. We must ensure that they are developed and used for the betterment of humanity and the preservation of our planet.
Furthermore, embracing these technologies requires a commitment to lifelong learning. The 21st century is a time of rapid change, and the only way to stay ahead is by continuously updating and expanding our knowledge and skills. We are the pioneers of this era, and it’s our responsibility to understand, harness, and guide these technologies for the greater good.
As a matter of Public Policy, I urge the Plateau State government to recognize the importance of sustaining initiatives like Code Plateau and moving towards the vision of Silicon Plateau. Plateau state is in dire need of a “Technology Playground” to be benefited by every Plateau State student, equipping them with knowledge of emerging technologies before they step into the post-graduation world.
During my tenure as the Director General of PICTDA, our vision for Code Plateau was to amplify the conversation about technology across all Local Government Areas in Plateau State. We understood our responsibility as a government to empower our citizens with technological knowledge. Several years later, we came to the realization that our inability to secure employment for them was due to their lack of early job experience.
Consequently, we were on the cusp of launching a new initiative called “Code for Plateau.” This program aimed to place individuals as technology interns within various government MDAs, where they could gain practical experience and contribute to the maintenance of government technology infrastructure. Regrettably, this initiative never took off before our term ended.
The prospect of emerging technologies in the 21st century is awe-inspiring. It’s a time of transformation, innovation, and immense potential. As students of the University, you have the opportunity to shape the future, to contribute to the advancement of society, and to address the challenges that lie ahead.
Remember that with innovation comes responsibility. Embrace these technologies with a strong sense of ethics and a commitment to making the world a better place. The future is in your hands, and the prospects are limitless. I have no doubt that you will rise to the occasion and make a lasting impact on our ever-evolving world.
I express my appreciation to the event organizers for their dedication, and I encourage them to continue prioritizing the needs of our students and future generations.
Today, we are honoured to have the distinguished Simon Bako LALONG, the Minister of Labour and Employment and former governor of Plateau State from our beloved state. In due time, he will unveil the nation’s employment plans and strategies. It’s essential for us, as educators, to ensure that our graduates are prepared to seamlessly fit into these plans, adapting to the ever-evolving employment landscape.
In conclusion, I hope that today’s discussions and the launch of our new website will inspire us all to embrace emerging technologies and contribute to the advancement of Plateau State. Let’s work together to create a brighter future, not only for ourselves but for generations to come.
Thank you, and may the spirit of innovation and progress guide our path.
