In celebration of Women Techmakers (WTM) International Women’s Day (IWD), Nana Theresa Timothy of ITEdgeNews spoke with Loretta Tohomdet, the Women Techmakers Ambassador for Jos, Plateau State. She shared insights on the impact of WTM.

Tell us about “The Women Techmakers” (WTM)?

The Women Techmakers is an initiative by Google designed to promote inclusivity in the tech industry. The program provides a safe space for women to share ideas, network, and gain access to resources that help them grow in tech. WTM is not limited to Jaws or Nigeria; it is a global movement with events happening across different countries.

Many women in tech work in male-dominated spaces, which can make it difficult for them to fully express themselves. WTM creates an exclusive platform where women can learn, network, and receive mentorship, even if they are new to tech.

What is the significance of this year’s theme, “Redefine Possible”?

Each year, WTM IWD events feature a unique theme that is voted on by the community. This year’s theme, “Redefine Possible,” aims to break societal limitations placed on women.

Many women grow up hearing statements like “This job is for men” or “Women should only focus on certain careers.” But women are proving that they can excel in all fields, from mechanics to software development. This theme encourages women to break stereotypes, explore new opportunities, and embrace their limitless potential.

In what ways does WTM support and empower women in tech?

WTM operates under Google Developers Group (GDG) Jaws, bringing together women with diverse tech backgrounds. Some members are experienced tech professionals, while others are just starting their journey. The community serves as a safe space where women can openly discuss challenges, share knowledge, and seek guidance from peers and mentors.

For instance, some women face workplace challenges specific to their gender but may feel uncomfortable discussing them with male colleagues. Through WTM, they can find support, encouragement, and practical solutions from other women who have faced similar issues.

What do you see as the biggest challenge facing women in the tech industry?

One of the most pressing challenges in the women-in-tech space is the lack of visible role models and mentors. Many accomplished women in tech hesitate to share their experiences publicly. As a result, aspiring women in tech struggle to find mentors who can guide them.

If more successful women in tech stepped into the spotlight and offered mentorship, it would make a huge difference.

Imagine a blockchain developer openly sharing her journey and inviting young women to learn from her. That level of accessibility could transform careers, Loretta emphasized.

What guidance would you give to women aspiring to build a career in tech?

Every woman faces unique challenges, but the key is perseverance,” Loretta advised. Many women start their tech journey but drop out due to challenges like imposter syndrome, technical difficulties, or lack of support.

When I started learning tech, I was part of an internship program where many women joined. However, by the end, only about three of us remained. The key is to develop resilience. Every developer no matter how experienced, faces bugs and setbacks. But if you keep pushing, you will succeed.”

Helping women redefine what’s possible

Women Techmakers is creating a future where more women can thrive in tech without barriers. By providing a supportive community, mentorship opportunities, and skill development resources, WTM is helping women redefine what is possible.

If you’re an aspiring tech woman, don’t give up. Keep learning, seek mentorship, and challenge the limitations society places on you. The future of tech needs more women, and WTM is here to make that happen.
