Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has initiated a groundbreaking partnership with Geniserve Limited, a data center and ICT infrastructure firm, to facilitate the installation of fiber optic cables across all 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Edo State. The objective is to enhance internet connectivity throughout the state.
During the formal signing of the partnership agreement at the Government House in Benin City, Governor Obaseki highlighted the significance of the initiative, emphasizing the plan to install approximately 2,000km of fiber optic cables across Edo State. He stressed that the project aims to connect schools, primary healthcare centers, and communities to the internet, creating hotspots and expanding telemedicine services to rural areas.
Governor Obaseki underscored the government’s commitment to transforming Edo into a smart, digital state, leveraging modern technology infrastructure to deliver services efficiently. He referenced a previous collaboration with Mainone and Facebook to establish a digital ring around Benin City and expressed satisfaction with extending similar infrastructure to other parts of the state.
Additionally, Governor Obaseki outlined plans to implement electronic governance software at the local government level, facilitating pension and gratuity services for elderly citizens in rural communities. He emphasized the urgency of the project, aiming to launch the network by the third week of October.
Representing Geniserve Limited, Mr. Tunde Famoroti commended the state government for the partnership, noting that the project encompasses the installation of fiber optic cables in various critical locations across Edo State, including schools and agricultural institutions.
