A Nigerian IT expert, Dr Agu Collins Agu, has developed an indigenous IoT based Remote Patient Monitoring System (IR PMS) to manage the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria in a way that put less stress on medical personnel and allow more effective patient administration at extremely low cost.

The IR PMS is an extension of a hospital medical system where patients vital body state can be monitored remotely using a multi-parameter approach.

Russian trained Agu, who is a senior official of the government IT clearinghouse, National Information Technology development Agency (NITDA), is also the inspirator of Kuje (Abuja) based Technology Development for Poverty Alleviation and Initiative (TD4PAI) hub where he is mentoring startups developing the IR PMS.

“The architecture is based on made-in-Nigeria RUWATRONIK IoT Platform developed under my mentor-ship at td4pai IoT Hub, Kuje, FCT,” said Agu in a Facebook post.
He is inviting stakeholders’ participation to get the solutions to market and address one of the biggest challenges in the country’s heath sector as coronavirus spreads and major Nigerian cities are locked down.
“We are currently working on the backend, mobile app and plan to roll out in a fortnight. Please kindly  join and support the ongoing work by contacting: [email protected] with the Subject: IoT based Remote Patient Monitoring System (iR PMS),” he added.

An indigenous IoT based Remote Patient Monitoring System (IR PMS) for the COVID-19 Pandemic mitigation in Nigeria is here!
The saying goes that if life throws a lemon at you, make a lemonade out of it; In line with my previous posts, a system is underway.
With the current rate of infection of medical Personnel as currently observed in Europe and USA, there is an increasing and urgent need for Nigeria to execute  automation of various hospital processes, especially patient monitoring in the possible  deficiency of medical personnel.
I am currently mentoring a team of start-ups developing the  IR PMS, which is an extension of a hospital medical system where patients vital body state can be monitored remotely using a multi-parameter approach.
The system monitors all vital health parameters remotely, it helps to diagnose the health condition of patients, creates a fast responding alert mechanism, ideal for patients needing constant monitoring of physical/physiological conditions in life threatening situations.
The system also provides timely warnings to doctors enabling their services to be activated in case of medical emergencies.
A single doctor can now monitor over 100 patients remotely in real-time enabling him to carry out multiple tasks!!
The proposed system collects patient’s physiological data through RUWATRONIK middleware with attached sensors, the data is relayed to the cloud for further processing and analytics for viewing, a feedback action is sent to the doctors/guardians via SMS, email etc
This system is energy autonomous with multiple communication channels and could be extended to monitor other disease outbreaks such as Lassa Fever, it could also be applied for monitoring of storage conditions (temperature, Humidity etc) of vital drugs and vaccines.
The deployment of iR PMS at primary Health Care facilities at the 774 LGAs will create much needed visibility and data to be utilized for Planning and prognosis.
It has a strategic application in sports enabling Athletes during training  to ascertain best training regimes for effectiveness.
Features
Will remotely detect various vital signs:
Electrical activity of the heart using Electrocardiogram (ECG)
Temperature using digital thermometer
SPO2 – blood oxygen saturation especially in COPD Patients using Pulse Oximeter
Body Movement/Fall using IMU
Toxic Gas/ Air Quality  using MQ Gas Sensors
Humidity (ambient conditions etc) using DH sensors
It is a scalable and reconfigurable system tied to a cloud application for data processing and analytics.

The architecture is based on made-in-Nigeria RUWATRONIK IoT Platform developed under my mentorship at td4pai IoT Hub, Kuje, FCT .
we are currently working on the backend, mobile app  and plan to roll out in a fortnight.
