When it comes to smartphone and PC sales, no market is even close to Asia. Thanks to its massive population of over 4.6 billion people, the region has topped the global chart of biggest spenders on devices for years. In 2024, Asians are expected to spend nearly $325 billion on smartphones and PCs, 47% of the world`s total and $100 billion more than Americans and Europeans combined. The five-year sales difference is even more shocking.

According to data presented by Stocklytics.com, Asians have spent almost $2 trillion on PCs and smartphones since 2019, or half a trillion dollars more than Europeans and Americans combined.

Asians Spent 3x more Money on Smartphones than on PCs

Although Asia is the undisputable global leader in PC and smartphone sales, the five-year sales revenue from the two markets shows quite different trends. According to a Statista Market Insights survey, smartphone sales have made $1.4 trillion, or roughly 70% of the region`s total spending on devices since 2019. Furthermore, the total five-year smartphone sales are three times higher than that of the PC segment, which grossed $547 billion between 2019 and 2024.

This massive sales difference comes as no surprise, considering that Asia houses some of the largest and fastest-growing smartphone markets, including China, India, Southeast Asia, and South Korea, and most of their population can afford a smartphone, which is not necessarily a case with a PC.

Statistics show PC sales in the region range from high-end devices in mature markets like China, Japan, and South Korea to affordable, entry-level systems in emerging and growing markets like India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. In these countries, the rising middle-class population and the surging demand for computing in education and small businesses have just started to fuel PC sales.

As a result, the annual sales revenue in the PC segment increased significantly over the past five years while smartphone sales dropped. According to Statista, the Asian PC segment is expected to gross $92 billion in 2024, or $11 billion more than five years ago. On the contrary, the annual smartphone sales in the region plunged by a massive $18 billion in this period, falling from $249 billion to $231 billion.

Total Spending to Grow by $1.7 Trillion by 2028

Although Asian smartphone sales have been on a downward spiral, that will change in the following years. According to Statista, Asians will spend another $1.7 trillion on devices by 2028, and most of that value will come from smartphone sales.

Statistics show the annual smartphone sales revenue in the region will grow by a considerable 23% and hit $287 billion by 2028, helping the four-year spending to hit a whopping $1.32 trillion. The Asian PC segment will see a much smaller 13% annual revenue growth and roughly $400 billion in total spending by 2028.

The Statista data also showed 48% of the global spending on PCs and smartphones in the next four years will come from Asia. Europe and the United States follow with much smaller shares of 17% and 15%, respectively.
