Gbenga Adebayo, chairman, ALTON, the umbrella body for telecommunications and support companies in Nigeria said the current prices of calls, data, and other telecommunication services are well above cost of producing the services.

Adebayo spoke in Lagos this week at the second expo edition to showcase indigenous content in the Nigerian telecom industry organised by the Nigeria Office for Developing the Indigenous Telecom Sector (NODITS) under the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

According to him, the “Current pricing regime is not sustainable under the current cost scheme” adding that the operators were already talking with the regulator on a possible way out.

“We are basically selling below cost. It is not easy to talk about, but we cannot continue like this. We must allow market forces to determine prices. We must look at a more realistic pricing offering because today’s pricing regime is not sustainable,” said Adebayo

The second edition of the Nigerian Telecommunications Indigenous Content Expo (NTICE 2023) held with the theme:  “Harnessing Indigenous Content for Economic Growth: Networking to Boost Investment” and drew participation from stakeholders across sectors.
