The Intercellular spectrum is now in the kitty of Airtel Africa Plc to spike the operator’s competitiveness in Nigeria.

The telecom giant announced purchasing the spectrum for $94m after obtaining approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in what should enhance its network capacity and reinforce its 4G presence in Nigeria.

Airtel trails behind MTN Nigeria and Globacom in Nigeria’s cell phone market of some 164 million subscribers. The telco acquired the 10 megahertz spectrum in the 900 megahertz band in Nigeria from Intercellular Nigeria Limited.

The $94m acquisition covers NCC fees in line with the commission’s Spectrum Trading Guidelines.

The new spectrum would help Airtel expand its data and home broadband services, improve both voice call quality and data experience and deepen.
