Airtel Africa has announced the construction of approximately 3,000 new sites and the deployment of over 5,600 kilometers of fiber, resulting in a 33% increase in data capacity across its network. This expansion enhances the customer experience for its 64.4 million subscribers across 14 African countries.

In its quarterly results ending June 30, 2024, Airtel Africa highlighted its focus on customer experience, driven by continuous network investment that increases capacity and coverage.
Key results include:
- An 8.6% increase in subscriber base to 155.4 million.
- A 13.4% growth in data subscribers to 64.4 million.
- A 25.1% rise in data usage per customer to 6.2 GBs, with smartphone penetration up by 4.7% to 41.7%.
- A 14.9% increase in mobile money subscribers, supporting greater financial inclusion.
- A 28.7% increase in transaction value in constant currency, with an annualized transaction value of $120 billion in reported currency.
- Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) grew by 9.6%, and mobile money ARPU by 8.8% in constant currency, maintaining an overall ARPU growth of 9.3% year on year.
The fiber rollout is part of Airtel Africa’s broader strategy to meet the escalating demand for high-speed data across its markets. CEO Sunil Taldar emphasized the focus on seizing new opportunities, particularly in enterprise, fiber, and data center businesses across Africa.
“Having visited most of our OpCos (operating companies) since I joined Airtel Africa, I am encouraged by the scale of the opportunity available across our markets in both the GSM and mobile money business. A key priority for us is to look for new opportunities to further grow our business, especially in the enterprise, fiber, and data center businesses across our footprint in Africa,” said Taldar.
